Win a Trip to Costa Rica!

Do you like tropical adventures, delicious bananas, sustainable agriculture, long walks on the beach, Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain? Then this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss! We’re teaming up with EARTH University to give you a chance to win a trip to Costa Rica to visit EARTH University in Guácimo, Limón. Five winners will embark on a seven-day Costa Rican adventure where they will:
  • Experience, first-hand, how EARTH University is preparing young students to become tomorrow’s leaders in sustainable agriculture, responsible business and community development.
  • Visit with the farmers who produce the rich and creamy EARTH University bananas and learn how their innovative growing methods are helping to save our planet’s precious resources.
  • Explore vibrant Costa Rica, relax on the majestic beaches of Puerto Viejo, sample local cuisine and cruise along the island’s southern coast in search of dolphins.
EARTH University is a nonprofit, international university dedicated to the sustainable development of the tropics through education, research and outreach. Whole Foods Market started selling fresh EARTH University bananas in 2007, then added their fresh pineapples, and was excited to begin offering the new frozen EARTH University Pineapple and EARTH University Banana Chunks in early 2011. The sales of these fresh and frozen fruits help fund scholarships, and finance research and investment in organic and sustainable agriculture. All of Whole Foods Market’s EARTH University offerings are part of our Whole Trade® Guarantee, which ensures fair prices are paid for products, better wages and working conditions for growers and sound environmental practices. Visit the contest page on our website for more details and be sure to enter on that contest page (not in the blog comments) by September 30th, 2011. No purchase necessary!

Truly, this would be an incredible foray into the future. What we've done to our farmers, and indirectly to ourselves, as regards food production needs to change, and this project in this country will lead the way. Bravo! Would love to share in the experience.

I'm glad to learn what the money from the products I am already buying supports. There is no other way but sustainable. What the U.S. has done to the food production system is not sustainable and has lead to pollution that our current environmental laws are unable to combat, as well as the decline of the American farmer in favor of corporate farming. What we are left with is food that is unhealthy for us to consume, polluted land and water, and a system that thinks the only answer is more production. I applaud this education program and hope the knowledge gained may be implemented close to home.

I am from the southwestern area of Louisiana. In recent years there has been an exciting growth of interest in organic gardening. Quite a few of small farmers have converted to organic and our farmers markets are growing in number. My mother and I share a garden, where we try and grow enough vegetables to feed our families. I would love to get some pointers on how to make that work on a larger scale. Of course to enjoy the beauty of Costa Rica would be an amazing lagniappe.

I have always dreamed of taking a trip to Costa Rica to learn more about alternative methods of treatments from plants and the land there. It is paradise, and it's paradise reaping with knowledge of ways to be healthy. Just like shopping at Whole Foods is our favorite way to learn about healthy items. We love the coffee alternatives, sushi, meats, fruits, everything about the store. I hope and pray that you will consider me for one of these trips, blessings, Paula

I see EARTH bananas in Whole Foods, and I support the Whole Trade idea. However, is this product organic? I see your article says that it's "sustainable" but "sustainable" and organic are not the same thing.
