Win a Year's Supply of Greener Cleaners

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Congratulations to our winner Katherine R., from Illinois! Thanks to everyone who entered! Happy Earth Month from Whole Foods Market! While Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, we’re celebrating throughout the month of April ‘cause we think our planet is worth celebrating . . . and saving. Thankfully, small eco-friendly steps add up, especially when we’re all in it together.

In celebration of Earth Month one lucky reader will win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale™ rated cleaning supplies from Better Life. Read on to find out how to enter.

What can you do? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, just take a small step every day. From using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs when you’re on-the-go, to recycling, composting and using cleaners with eco-conscious ingredients when you’re at home, your green opportunities are endless.

So let’s each make an Earth Day resolution! No, we don’t need to break out the guitars and sing (though I’m always game) but we can start by sharing our green resolutions.

Here’s my resolution: Plant a container garden so my daughter can witness firsthand where food comes from and appreciate the incredible taste of produce moments after it’s picked.

What’s Whole Foods Market doing? Like so many of our passionate customers, we too certainly believe in doing our part — from Team Members’ grassroots Green Mission initiatives to in-store “green” efforts to developing company-wide standards. Standards like our Eco-Scale™ Rating System – an industry-first set of tiered standards for household cleaners. Eco-Scale rated products have their ingredients listed on the label (did you know that’s not common practice for household cleaners?).

They’re also third-party verified to meet Whole Food Market's Eco-Scale ingredient standards, which were crafted after consideration of environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. From this product evaluation, they get a red, orange, yellow or green rating on our Eco-Scale. If it’s rated red then we won’t sell it in our stores.

Not only does this rating system allow our shoppers to make informed choices but it also encourages producers to create better products.

Now it's your turn: Share one simple change you’re planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 22nd (Earth Day) will be entered to win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale rated cleaners from Better Life.

Valued at $350, the year’s supply of cleaning products includes: what-EVER! all-purpose cleaners; I Can See Clearly, Wow! window cleaners; Even The Kitchen Sink cleansing scrubbers; Simply Floored! ready-to-use floor cleaners; Oak-Y-Dokey wood cleaners and polish; Dish It Out liquid dish soaps; Automatic Magic dishwasher gels; No Regrets liquid hand soaps in Citrus Mint; Go Forth and Conquer hand soaps in Clary Sage & Citrus and a six-compartment cleaning caddy.

And even if you don’t win the prize, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come.

What simple change can you make? Add your comment by April 22nd for a chance to win!

I was part of the Ecology Club in high school (over 30 years ago) and was very cognizant of saving the Earth even back then. To that end, I have always reused and recycled. I use a shower head that stops the flow with a flip of the switch (when soaping up), unplug electronics/electrics and turn off lights when not in use, never let water run needlessly when washing hands (even in public restrooms!) or brushing my teeth at home, use towels instead of paper towels for drying hands, bring excess plastic bags to the dog park for others to reuse for doggy-do, bring old magazines to a hospital's E.R., etcetera because it is just second nature for me (it will be for you all too!) I have not gone "joy shopping" aka window-shopping/actual-shopping in 6 months to a year. My Earth Day Resolution is to pick up trash on my walks.

We recycle more than we throw out. Planning heirloom organic garden, preserving as much as possible. Installing 2 rain barrels nest week. I use reusable bags. Whatever plastic bags I do get, I donate to a local resale shop. I repurpose many items, shop garage sales, resale shops and flea markets. I do many other things, but my next step is non-toxic cleaners and pest control.

We are just putting in a raised bed at home to plant our first official organic garden. our kids are so excited. Since I help at our kids school for both their school gardens. We spent all day yesterday helping at our kids school in helping to set up the school garden for spring/summer garden planning. I also plan on being more responsible about our plastic waste and not purchasing any water bottles or plastic waste that could somehow contribute to the growing island of plastic in our oceans. happy earth day! much love

I installed a tankless water heater, had my kids help a bit. This way, they also understand the benefits and work involved in saving energy. We recycled the old broken hot water heater together. It was good bonding time.
