Win a Year's Supply of Greener Cleaners

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Congratulations to our winner Katherine R., from Illinois! Thanks to everyone who entered! Happy Earth Month from Whole Foods Market! While Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, we’re celebrating throughout the month of April ‘cause we think our planet is worth celebrating . . . and saving. Thankfully, small eco-friendly steps add up, especially when we’re all in it together.

In celebration of Earth Month one lucky reader will win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale™ rated cleaning supplies from Better Life. Read on to find out how to enter.

What can you do? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, just take a small step every day. From using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs when you’re on-the-go, to recycling, composting and using cleaners with eco-conscious ingredients when you’re at home, your green opportunities are endless.

So let’s each make an Earth Day resolution! No, we don’t need to break out the guitars and sing (though I’m always game) but we can start by sharing our green resolutions.

Here’s my resolution: Plant a container garden so my daughter can witness firsthand where food comes from and appreciate the incredible taste of produce moments after it’s picked.

What’s Whole Foods Market doing? Like so many of our passionate customers, we too certainly believe in doing our part — from Team Members’ grassroots Green Mission initiatives to in-store “green” efforts to developing company-wide standards. Standards like our Eco-Scale™ Rating System – an industry-first set of tiered standards for household cleaners. Eco-Scale rated products have their ingredients listed on the label (did you know that’s not common practice for household cleaners?).

They’re also third-party verified to meet Whole Food Market's Eco-Scale ingredient standards, which were crafted after consideration of environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. From this product evaluation, they get a red, orange, yellow or green rating on our Eco-Scale. If it’s rated red then we won’t sell it in our stores.

Not only does this rating system allow our shoppers to make informed choices but it also encourages producers to create better products.

Now it's your turn: Share one simple change you’re planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 22nd (Earth Day) will be entered to win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale rated cleaners from Better Life.

Valued at $350, the year’s supply of cleaning products includes: what-EVER! all-purpose cleaners; I Can See Clearly, Wow! window cleaners; Even The Kitchen Sink cleansing scrubbers; Simply Floored! ready-to-use floor cleaners; Oak-Y-Dokey wood cleaners and polish; Dish It Out liquid dish soaps; Automatic Magic dishwasher gels; No Regrets liquid hand soaps in Citrus Mint; Go Forth and Conquer hand soaps in Clary Sage & Citrus and a six-compartment cleaning caddy.

And even if you don’t win the prize, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come.

What simple change can you make? Add your comment by April 22nd for a chance to win!

I'm going to start riding my bike and walking to stores close by rather than driving. Also, I am going to try and use less energy by keeping lights off in rooms I am not in. I'm really bad at that!

My granddaughter (6) and I planted a small garden and potted 18 herbs which we use for cooking and baking. My granddaughter helps me recycle and we feed birds, three stray cats (which we've been unable to catch to have spayed, but are trying), and a possum that visits from a nearby creek when she can't find any food. We also do our best to conserve water and electricity. Yesterday, we went to see Chimpanzee since 50% of the profits this week go to Jane Goodall's foundation and we contribute to Save the Tiger and National Geo's Big Cat venture. Additionally, I drive a Prius, buy most of our produce from the local farmer's market and from Whole Foods, and use vinegar and baking soda in place of as many cleaning products as possible. Of course, the main thing I do for the environment is vote for the Democrats...I wish they would do more for the environment, but they're much better than the alternative.

I will restart our compost and add the previous year's compost product to our garden and plant herbs, vegetables, and sunflowers with my children. I will investigate teh cost and practicality of installing a geothermal heat/cooling pump instead of our gas-powered furnace in our house. I will investigate the cost of installing energy-efficient windows in our house.

I will stop buying cleaning products (spray cleaners, paper towels, sponges) and instead use homemade cleaners (out of vinegar, baking soda, lemon, etc) and re-usable rags to cut down on waste! There is too much trash generated from plastic bottles and dirty paper towels
