Win a Year's Supply of Greener Cleaners

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Congratulations to our winner Katherine R., from Illinois! Thanks to everyone who entered! Happy Earth Month from Whole Foods Market! While Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, we’re celebrating throughout the month of April ‘cause we think our planet is worth celebrating . . . and saving. Thankfully, small eco-friendly steps add up, especially when we’re all in it together.

In celebration of Earth Month one lucky reader will win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale™ rated cleaning supplies from Better Life. Read on to find out how to enter.

What can you do? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, just take a small step every day. From using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs when you’re on-the-go, to recycling, composting and using cleaners with eco-conscious ingredients when you’re at home, your green opportunities are endless.

So let’s each make an Earth Day resolution! No, we don’t need to break out the guitars and sing (though I’m always game) but we can start by sharing our green resolutions.

Here’s my resolution: Plant a container garden so my daughter can witness firsthand where food comes from and appreciate the incredible taste of produce moments after it’s picked.

What’s Whole Foods Market doing? Like so many of our passionate customers, we too certainly believe in doing our part — from Team Members’ grassroots Green Mission initiatives to in-store “green” efforts to developing company-wide standards. Standards like our Eco-Scale™ Rating System – an industry-first set of tiered standards for household cleaners. Eco-Scale rated products have their ingredients listed on the label (did you know that’s not common practice for household cleaners?).

They’re also third-party verified to meet Whole Food Market's Eco-Scale ingredient standards, which were crafted after consideration of environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. From this product evaluation, they get a red, orange, yellow or green rating on our Eco-Scale. If it’s rated red then we won’t sell it in our stores.

Not only does this rating system allow our shoppers to make informed choices but it also encourages producers to create better products.

Now it's your turn: Share one simple change you’re planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 22nd (Earth Day) will be entered to win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale rated cleaners from Better Life.

Valued at $350, the year’s supply of cleaning products includes: what-EVER! all-purpose cleaners; I Can See Clearly, Wow! window cleaners; Even The Kitchen Sink cleansing scrubbers; Simply Floored! ready-to-use floor cleaners; Oak-Y-Dokey wood cleaners and polish; Dish It Out liquid dish soaps; Automatic Magic dishwasher gels; No Regrets liquid hand soaps in Citrus Mint; Go Forth and Conquer hand soaps in Clary Sage & Citrus and a six-compartment cleaning caddy.

And even if you don’t win the prize, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come.

What simple change can you make? Add your comment by April 22nd for a chance to win!

this year I'm attempting to grow my own herbs, chives, cilantro, basil, mint, rosemary, parsley and tomatoes. Also cutting back on the lights being on around the house. I recycle all plastic bags at local stores and have purchased reusable bags .

I've always owned reusable grocery bags, but tend to forget them at home. I usually find myself with a shopping cart full of groceries at checkout, remembering that I left my reusable bags on the counter at home. I am going to try and keep the reusable bags in my car in the front seat where I can see them and try and set up my iPhone grocery list to include a reusable bag reminder on it. Plastic bags are such a waste. I try and reuse them for trashcan liners, but I always end up with too many of them!

I bought BPA free re-useable containers for my lunch and now I only use the bright colored containers for the kids lunches. No more plastic bags! I also don't buy the juice boxes- I have a plastic thermos for the drinks.

We have just planted 3 containers on our deck for gardening. O ne container is herbs, lettuce and other edible delectables. The other two are columnar apple trees of differenct varieties. We hope they will produce well for helping the environment and our grocery bill.

I will order less products over the internet and try to purchase more at retail stores. This will save on the excessive packaging required to individually mail each item to our house.

I have been trying to make several small changes. I try to plan my errands so that I save gasoline by grouping trips in the same general area of town together. My husband is expanding the square foot garden he began last year. We are eating more organic and locally grown foods and using more eco-friendly and child-safe products in our home.

I live in one of the few states left that still has some "green" in it naturally. The population in my state is still small enough that everyone isn't piled on top of one another. I am blessed to live in WV, so everyday is like Earth day for me thanks to my home in the mountains. I live on the river. I hike the mountain trails. I hunt and eat wild mushrooms given to me by Mother Nature. I recycle what I can and re-purpose the rest. I swing from apple tree limbs that my father and grandfather planted for me to enjoy. I bake apple pies using local apples only whole foods. I know my neighbor and we garden together. I smile to think that because of combined efforts of many generations, I can call myself blessed. I will honor their legacy by doing everything I can to continue my state be magical and "green" for many more years to come...
