Win a Year's Supply of Greener Cleaners

By Elizabeth Smith, April 3, 2012  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Elizabeth Smith

Congratulations to our winner Katherine R., from Illinois! Thanks to everyone who entered! Happy Earth Month from Whole Foods Market! While Earth Day is officially on April 22nd, we’re celebrating throughout the month of April ‘cause we think our planet is worth celebrating . . . and saving. Thankfully, small eco-friendly steps add up, especially when we’re all in it together.

In celebration of Earth Month one lucky reader will win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale™ rated cleaning supplies from Better Life. Read on to find out how to enter.

What can you do? It doesn’t have to be overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be all-or-nothing, just take a small step every day. From using reusable shopping bags, water bottles and coffee mugs when you’re on-the-go, to recycling, composting and using cleaners with eco-conscious ingredients when you’re at home, your green opportunities are endless.

So let’s each make an Earth Day resolution! No, we don’t need to break out the guitars and sing (though I’m always game) but we can start by sharing our green resolutions.

Here’s my resolution: Plant a container garden so my daughter can witness firsthand where food comes from and appreciate the incredible taste of produce moments after it’s picked.

What’s Whole Foods Market doing? Like so many of our passionate customers, we too certainly believe in doing our part — from Team Members’ grassroots Green Mission initiatives to in-store “green” efforts to developing company-wide standards. Standards like our Eco-Scale™ Rating System – an industry-first set of tiered standards for household cleaners. Eco-Scale rated products have their ingredients listed on the label (did you know that’s not common practice for household cleaners?).

They’re also third-party verified to meet Whole Food Market's Eco-Scale ingredient standards, which were crafted after consideration of environmental impact, safety, efficacy, source, labeling and animal testing. From this product evaluation, they get a red, orange, yellow or green rating on our Eco-Scale. If it’s rated red then we won’t sell it in our stores.

Not only does this rating system allow our shoppers to make informed choices but it also encourages producers to create better products.

Now it's your turn: Share one simple change you’re planning to make for Earth Day. Everyone who enters a comment on this post between now and April 22nd (Earth Day) will be entered to win a year’s supply of Eco-Scale rated cleaners from Better Life.

Valued at $350, the year’s supply of cleaning products includes: what-EVER! all-purpose cleaners; I Can See Clearly, Wow! window cleaners; Even The Kitchen Sink cleansing scrubbers; Simply Floored! ready-to-use floor cleaners; Oak-Y-Dokey wood cleaners and polish; Dish It Out liquid dish soaps; Automatic Magic dishwasher gels; No Regrets liquid hand soaps in Citrus Mint; Go Forth and Conquer hand soaps in Clary Sage & Citrus and a six-compartment cleaning caddy.

And even if you don’t win the prize, your green resolution efforts will be rewarded with a cleaner, greener, healthier planet for many Earth Days to come.

What simple change can you make? Add your comment by April 22nd for a chance to win!

1)I get my kids involved by giving their old toys to other children who could make use of them. Here the kids learn 2 lessons: one is about giving to others and the second is about reusing and recycling instead of throwing things away. 2)I can hold a clothing swap where relatives, friends, co-workers and neighbors can have a fun, free way to find new wardrobe.

I will make sure I always use reusable shopping bags if possible, stop wasting water while brushing mt teeth and research what types of vegetables I can grow in pots on my patio or balcony. Thanks again for reminding us how important it is that we do our part and spread the word!

I'm making a commitment to recycle more diligently and to start to re-use/re-purpose as many items as possible. I plan on this being a lot of fun and being very creative with my 9 yr. old.

I have made a lot of changes in my world since having my son in 2008... organic and non-toxic are HUGE in our home. This year we are planting a garden of veggies for the first time together! We have a composter and are purchasing a rain barrel (so excited!!!) I LOVE to use green cleaners or make my own if I need to because then my son can help me :o) So, I thank you for your products and a chance to win some. We are starting to use less power and work with the sun more in our home and yard so that we dont waste anymore. Also purchased organic sponges and are not purchasing any more 'paper' towels. Should make a big dent with a 4 year old :o)

I use vinegar in the washing machine instead of fabric softener and vinegar in the dishwasher instead of rinse aid. Better for the environment, your wallet and you!

I have planted herbs in containers that I can go out my kitchen door and snip these fresh instead of going to the grocery store 8 miles one way.

I have recently tried to make my own cleaners. Most of them work pretty good, I just cant seem to get a good dish soap, so being able to use an environmentally safe brand that works would be fantastic.

I have been using environmentally safe cleaners in my home and love the results. I have yet to find a cleaner for my bath tub which works well with the soap scum. Any suggestions? I love assisting the environment with healthier alternatives as it is our one and only home we have.

I try to be green in many ways. I shop resale most times. Am growing my own vegetables this summer, use my food scrapes for composting, use re-useable bags most times, make my own lunch and coffee ect. Am still wanting to learn more ways to be green not only to save our planet and be healthy but also to be wise with our money. I would like to try the environmentally friendly soap for cleaning my home.

I've been doing as much as possible to help mother "Earth". I eat only local organic foods, I am vegetarian, I recycle the trash, it's hard when related to transportation. I like bike riding and my resolution is to avoid my car.....
