My favorite Christmas sounds comes from the Scandinavian celebration of Santa Lucia - it is so beautiful. And the ceremony with all in white and Santa Lucia with a crown of candles on her head is luminous. Brings back wonderful memories of Scandinavia and the Nordic countries in winter.

There could not be a better Christmas song than Schubert's Ave Maria. This song has been my favorite song since I first heard it many years ago.

My family is german and I love when my mom turns on the old tranditional German christmas carols. You'd be surprised how many of the songs we sing at Christmas stem from German songs!

When does very traditional become so old its now non-traditional? I enjoy an old recording from Williamsburg, VA of old hymns with harpsichord and bells. I was there for Christmas 1998 and there was a massive ice storm that knocked out electricity for days. Midnight mass had to be done w/out organ or lights - all candles, flashlights and harpsichord - just as it once was done - and the power of a church full of voices. That was the same year my mom, my sister, my aunt and my dog died and there was something healing about the group assembled in a sort of adversity (slick roads, no electricity, etc)- harpsichord musice brings back that Christmas.

Although their music has become a traditional standard over these past years, the Trans Siberian Orchestra started out very unique and exciting. I still like to listen several of the Christmas songs very loud during the holidays.

The Pretenders "2,000 Miles" is one of my favorite Christmas songs. I think it's pretty non-traditional. Also, I like "Xmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses. It's my favorite anti-Christmas song, but it has a happy ending.
