World Christmas Party

Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. While people around the world celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve in different ways, we all share the common desire to enjoy a festive holiday season with family and friends. After all, “‘tis the season to be jolly,” so Putumayo has assembled some of our favorite upbeat seasonal songs to get you rockin' around the Christmas tree. So get ready to deck the halls with a world Christmas party! (Read on for a chance to win a CD collection of Christmas music.) I’ve always enjoyed looking out for compelling versions of Christmas music recorded in other parts of the world and how different cultures celebrate Christmas. On a trip to New Zealand last year, I found one of my favorites, a Maori recording of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” We also asked two of our favorite international musicians, José Conde and Maria de Barros, to record new versions of “Winter Wonderland” and “Deck the Halls,” which turned out really well. And, among the many other appealing recordings, legendary Poncho Sanchez provides a Latin jazz twist to the Christmas classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” This holiday season, enjoy a fresh spin on Christmas classics in reggae, samba, ska, Cape Verdean coladeira and other musical styles while enjoying Coquito, a Puerto Rican eggnog drink — recipe included in the CD. So, what are your favorite non-traditional sounds of Christmas? Let us know by December 7th in the comment section below. One comment post will be selected at random to receive a Putumayo Christmas collection of 5 CDs: World Christmas Party, Christmas Around the World, A Jazz & Blues Christmas, New Orleans Christmas and A Family Christmas. Merry Christmas!

Celtic Christmas music. I discovered it back in the 90's and ever since, Christmas music should be played on Celtic instruments for me to get the holiday spirit.

Holiday Song: The Sign Of Love - Christmas is the sign of love. This is where good drives out the scrooges, grinches, and other sour people who want to mess up Christmas. Gene's "Uher-nog" helps too. I do believe Christmas being a holiday with Santa Claus, Grinches, Animals, Religious beliefs and family and friends means so many good things to all of us ! What we need to do is go into this time of the year feeling good about our life and living and the life and living of everyone around our planet. If we can go into the holiday season in this open, peaceful way we will now and in the future create a much more peaceful and wonderful world to live in. Out of that great show StarTrek we can all live long and prosper from our open hearts, minds and peace. My wishes to you no matter what your religious belief is for you to live a peaceful life today and in your future !

My favorite by far is a crazy compilation called "Blame It On Christmas". Lots of spoofs and send ups of classics that are actually really fun to listen to. "White Christmas" because an Irish drinking song, there's marching bands, klezmer bands and some surf guitar! http://www.amazon.com/Blame-Christmas-Vol-Various-Artists/dp/B0000012S8

I have enjoyed Putumayo CD's for several years now and always recommend them to friends. One of my favorites was a record I borrowed from a library that had Christmas songs for the Hearing Impaired. I taught deaf and hard of hearing students in Cleveland schools and thought it might be interesting for my hard of hearing students. The selections cut out certain frequencies so that the listener could hear the Christmas music "better". This was a unique experience for some of them.

When does very traditional become so old its now non-traditional? I enjoy an old recording from Williamsburg, VA of old hymns with harpsichord and bells. I was there for Christmas 1998 and there was a massive ice storm that knocked out electricity for days. Midnight mass had to be done w/out organ or lights - all candles, flashlights and harpsichord - just as it once was done - and the power of a church full of voices. That was the same year my mom, my sister, my aunt and my dog died and there was something healing about the group assembled in a sort of adversity (slick roads, no electricity, etc)- harpsichord musice brings back that Christmas.

Although their music has become a traditional standard over these past years, the Trans Siberian Orchestra started out very unique and exciting. I still like to listen several of the Christmas songs very loud during the holidays.

We shop at Whole Foods at least twice, if not three times a week...why? Because it is so healthy, so amazingly fresh and so INTERNATIONAL! I love shopping there because I can find the best the world has to offer in one stop! Thank you Whole Foods for keeping me and my family healthy and for sharring the best the world has to offer with all of us! This Holiday Season we will be offering only the best to our friends and family, this is why we will shop only at Whole Foods as we host our Holiday get-togethers and we would LOVE to have an International Holiday CD such as a World Christmas Party to be playing in the background. Happy Holidays to all :)

My favorite is Spirit of Christmas Past by Enya.

I like anything Irish, but my all-time favorite non-traditional song is "Mary's Boy Child," by Boney-M. I think the upbeat rhythm suits the holiday wonderfully. I'd love to win this set; our holiday party this year has an international Christmas theme - foods, decorations, and traditions from each of the 7 continents.(Antarctica's contribution will be ice-skating penguin figurines and Ice!) :-) It's been a blast doing the research!

Lynn Schmidt says …

My family loves Christmas music all year.

Shadia Lahlou says …

I really do enjoy simplistic, light Christmas music with minimalist instruments. Hearing the sole sounds and shapes of a talented voice really does allow for the season to sink in, clearly, warmly and soothingly. A passionate voice can go so far without traditional, elaborate composition.

Teresa Gallina says …

I was born in Venezuela, and as much as I love the rhythmic beat of gaitas, I have fallen in love with the voice of Ella Fitzgerald singing Christmas music!
