World Christmas Party

By Dan Storper, November 22, 2010  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Dan Storper
Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music. While people around the world celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve in different ways, we all share the common desire to enjoy a festive holiday season with family and friends. After all, “‘tis the season to be jolly,” so Putumayo has assembled some of our favorite upbeat seasonal songs to get you rockin' around the Christmas tree. So get ready to deck the halls with a world Christmas party! (Read on for a chance to win a CD collection of Christmas music.) I’ve always enjoyed looking out for compelling versions of Christmas music recorded in other parts of the world and how different cultures celebrate Christmas. On a trip to New Zealand last year, I found one of my favorites, a Maori recording of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” We also asked two of our favorite international musicians, José Conde and Maria de Barros, to record new versions of “Winter Wonderland” and “Deck the Halls,” which turned out really well. And, among the many other appealing recordings, legendary Poncho Sanchez provides a Latin jazz twist to the Christmas classic “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” This holiday season, enjoy a fresh spin on Christmas classics in reggae, samba, ska, Cape Verdean coladeira and other musical styles while enjoying Coquito, a Puerto Rican eggnog drink — recipe included in the CD. So, what are your favorite non-traditional sounds of Christmas? Let us know by December 7th in the comment section below. One comment post will be selected at random to receive a Putumayo Christmas collection of 5 CDs: World Christmas Party, Christmas Around the World, A Jazz & Blues Christmas, New Orleans Christmas and A Family Christmas. Merry Christmas!

Our favorite non-traditional sounds of Christmas is the Spanish Carol (Villancico) "Con Mi Burrito Sabanero" (With my Grasslands Donkey). It's a about a little boy riding his little burro (dunkey) to Bethlehem, singing and playing his cantrico all the way. Translation of the original Spanish song is below: I am riding to Bethlehem on my grasslands donkey. If you see me, I’m going to Bethlehem. I sing with my cantrico as my donkey trots. Hurry up, my little donkey, we’re almost there. Hurry up, my little donkey, we’re going to see Jesus. Spanish Lyrics: Con mi burrito sabanero voy camino de Belén con mi burrito sabanero voy camino de Belén Si me ven, si me ven voy camino de Belén si me ven, si me ven voy camino de Belén. Con mi cuatrico voy cantando mi burrito va trotando con mi cuatrico voy cantando mi burrito va trotando Tuqui tuqui tuqui tuqui Tuqui tuqui tuquitá apurate mi burrito que ya vamos a llegar Tuqui tuqui tuqui tuqui tuqui tuqui tuquitú apurate mi burrito vamos a ver a Jesús Many Spanish artists have sign this wonderful "villancico" either on traditional, salsa, merengue, and many other genders. Thanks, Alma

We love to listen to "Mr. Stinky Feet's Christmas" CD. One of our favorite songs is "Hey Santa, Hey Santa." We love the part when he requests is sister to be put on Santa's naughty list. It is so cute and funny! Mr. Stinky feet is also known as Jim Cosgrove.

Music and voices that express joy, reverence and gratitude? It would be a treat to listen to music of the heart from around the world. As long as there is music, there is hope. I imagine the Putumayo Christmas collection to be the voice of hope from around the world. I haven't found my favorite non-traditional sound of Christmas, but perhaps it will be in this collection.

I had a wonderful time in Quetzal, Guatamala one Christmas and the music was great. I can't think of any song in particular but very distinct and traditional.

My favorite non-traditional Christmas sounds are the songs from "The Sound of Music". As a little girl, I grew up without a T.V. in our house, so going to Grandma's house at Christmastime and watching T.V. was a huge treat! "The Sound of Music" was always shown Christmas Eve, and I was a rather older adult when I finally realized that it is not, in fact, a Christmas movie! Still, the songs remind me of Christmas whenever I hear them!

My favorite non-traditional sounds of Christmas are the sounds of Mannheim Steamroller. Most of their works are upbeat, festive, with a little traditional tossed in. I always smile and tap my feet when the music starts. I always think happy times when I hear their sound of Christmas.
