National Hot Fudge Sundae Day - July 25
Friday, July 25th
12:00 AM
Whole Foods Market San Mateo,

Sundae! Sundae! Sundae! July 25 is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day.

Today, we honor one of food's greatest combinations: hot and cold. As the two temperatures collide on your spoon, the ice cream melts just a little and the flavors and textures combine. It’s melty, creamy, and chocolaty all in the same bite. Surely, this is what dreams are made of?

While the origin of the plain ol' sundae is disputed, there’s no mistaking where the hot fudge version got its start. Clarence Clifton Brown is credited with the invention, and served hot fudge sundaes in his Hollywood store starting in 1906. It allegedly took him two months to perfect the recipe.

In the days when ice cream parlors weren’t a novelty but rather the standard, hot fudge sundaes were served in fluted classes so the hot chocolaty goodness could run all the way down the sides.

A good hot fudge sauce shouldn't melt all the other ingredients, namely the ice cream. Melted chocolate tends to "seize"or harden when cooled, so using it alone isn’t ideal for this preparation. The addition of heavy cream, butter or even light corn syrup can help achieve that rich, creamy consistency.

If you’re feeling guilty (which, by the way, you shouldn't be - treat your self!), remember that a hot fudge sundae contains 21% of your recommended daily calcium intake.

National Creme Bruelee Day - July 27

Whole Foods Market San Mateo Bakery,

Get your spoon ready for some crack-a-lackin' - July 27 is National Crème Brûlée Day!

Although the English referred to this sweet little ramekin full of love as "burnt cream," the name crème brûlée just sounds so much better, no?

The origins of this dish are a bit hazy, but the name first appeared in Francois Massialot's cookbook in 1691. "Trinity Cream" or Cambridge Burnt Cream became a traditional dessert at Trinity College in Cambridge during 1879 when a version of crème brûlée was served with the college arms branded into the cream top. Now that's some serious college pride.

A five-ingredient French delicacy, rich vanilla custard is topped with a hard "burnt sugar" top. Check out our own wonderful crème brûlée tutorial with step-by-step photos.

But have a mind with that torch - you don't want to end up a crispy critter.

National Lasagna Day - July 29
Tuesday, July 29th

Whole Foods Market San Mateo,

Today's foodie forecast: layers and layers of flavor - July 29 is National Lasagna Day.

What do you do with flat, chewy pasta and curly edges? Slap some cheese, tomato sauce and your choice of meat or veggies in between, throw it in the oven and scarf down this tremendously tiered dish.

Several origin stories surround lasagna, and a couple point to Ancient Greece as the birthplace of this cheesy comfort food - includng one that the name stems from the type of serving dish, lasonon, used to bake lasagna. Now characteristic of central Italy, lasagna has many flavorful variations, depending on the region.

Whether you're a meat lover or vegetarian, ragù purist or Béchamel enthusiast, there's a type of lasagna for everyone. You can even wrap it like a roll-up if you like your lasagna on the go.

And if you love lasagna as much as Weird Al Yankovic, la-la-la-la-la-lasagna the night away.
