Our next Community Giving Day on April 10 will benefit the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation (jamieoliverfoodfoundation.org). Five percent of the day's net sales will be contributed to this 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All Whole Foods Market Northern California and Reno stores will be participating.

 

The Jamie Oliver Food Foundation (JOFF) is a California-based non-profit foundation that works to bring food education to schools and youth groups, businesses and communities. It does this by raising awareness in the media to galvanize policy changes at a local and national level, offering hands-on training to instill food skills and knowledge and founding partnerships to enable JOFF to scale nationally.

 

Proceeds from the Community Giving Day will be used to create these specific programs in Northern California and Reno:

  • After-School Clubs:  WFM and the JOFF will launch food education programs with selected Boys and Girls Clubs that have close proximity to Whole Foods Market stores.
  • Whole Kids™ Foundation (wholekidsfoundation.org): JOFF will work closely with the Whole Kids Foundation (WKF), a charitable organization that provides children with access to healthy food choices through partnerships with schools, educators and organizations. Together, they will bring food education and nutrition programs to select WKF Salad Bar recipients.

In addition to a wide variety of hands-on, tactile recipes, kids will participate in additional food-related activities.

With its different textures and temperatures, the ice cream sandwich is a treat that satisfies more than one of the senses.

It’s unclear who we have to thank for this portable dessert, but we’re grateful nonetheless. Depending on where you are in the world, your ice cream sandwich can look very different from what Americans are used to. Some other countries use wafers, cake or even profiteroles instead of cookies for the top and bottom layers.

The beauty of the ice cream sandwich is that it’s very easy to make. If you’re going to bake your own cookies for the treat, make sure they’re bigger and flatter than normal so they don’t break apart. The ice cream to cookie ratio is key as well: too much ice cream, in this instance, will leave you with a mess on your hands.

Ice cream sandwiches can be easily assembled by kids or dressed up by adults. They make for a great interactive dessert after an elaborate dinner. Bake a variety of cookies and have a few different ice creams on hand and guests can practice their sandwich artistry. There’s nothing like feeling like a kid again!
