Our Commitment to GMO Transparency

We are the first national grocery chain committed to providing GMO (genetically modified organism) transparency for our customers by 2018.

We are well on our way to meeting our September, 2018 deadline. Currently, we offer more than 30,000 organic and 13,500 Non-GMO Project Verified products (exact count varies by store location).

Being the first to do a lot of this work with GMO transparency means we are paving the way for those who will follow. Our GMO transparency initiative includes all of the food we sell and it takes time to work through all of the details.

We are working hard on this process and are committed to providing our customers the information they desire to help them make choices — something that isn’t available anywhere else.

What's happening right now in the process?

Here’s a breakdown of just some of the work going on by store department.

Grocery | Produce | Meat | Prepared Foods
Dairy, Eggs & Cheese | Seafood | Bakery | Specialty
Wine & Beer | Body Care & Supplements

PACKAGED FOODS (GROCERY)

  • For several years, we’ve sought out new offerings that are organic (thus non-GMO) or non-GMO (Non-GMO Project Verified or NSF Non-GMO Certified).
  • We’ve pioneered products (eggs, yogurt, milk) from animals fed non-GMO feed and launched numerous biodynamic products, which do not allow GMOs.

FRESH PRODUCE

  • We offer an unmatched selection of organic (thus non-GMO) fresh fruits and vegetables every day.
  • We work to offer verified non-GMO versions of the five GMO-risk produce items (corn, papaya, zucchini, yellow summer squash and edamame/soybeans) in our stores.
  • We keep an eye out for additional crops that have been approved for GMO planting. GMO versions of tomatoes and potatoes have been approved, but are not in commercial production. Arctic brand apples are available in some markets, but we do not and will not carry them.

MEAT DEPARTMENT

  • We work with national suppliers to encourage the use of non-GMO feed.
  • Some of our local and regional suppliers are Non-GMO Project Verified. Their size makes it easier for them to work with a small mill to provide non-GMO feed.
  • We offer a selection of organic (thus non-GMO-fed) meat and poultry items.

PREPARED FOODS DEPARTMENT

  • When we use canola oil in our own kitchens, we use expeller-pressed, non-GMO canola oil.
  • We’ve communicated with our suppliers about our preference for non-GMO ingredients.
  • We provide organic options throughout our prepared foods department, including salad bar items, rotisserie chicken and soups.

DAIRY DEPARTMENT (DAIRY, CHEESE AND EGGS)

  • We work with national suppliers to encourage the use of non-GMO feed.
  • We’ve pioneered new products from animals fed non-GMO feed (eggs, yogurt, milk).
  • All of our 365 Everyday Value® brand eggs are Non-GMO Project Verified or organic (thus non-GMO).
  • We offer an unmatched selection of organic (thus non-GMO-fed) dairy and cheese items.

SEAFOOD DEPARTMENT

  • We’ve reached out to all of our aquaculture suppliers to discuss GMO ingredients in feed.
  • We are working to launch Non-GMO Project Verified and NSF Non-GMO Certified seafood products.
  • A significant amount of Whole Foods Market's farmed seafood comes from Europe where GMOs are not as prevalent in feed for farmed seafood.
  • Our Responsibly Farmed seafood standards prohibit genetically engineered fish.
  • We do not and will not carry genetically engineered salmon, which began appearing in some markets in 2017.

BAKERY DEPARTMENT

  • Some of our bakehouses are certified organic facilities that ship organic bakery goods to our stores. Organic prohibits GMOs.
  • All plant-derived ingredients in our 365 Everyday Value® food products (including baked goods) are non-GMO.

SPECIALTY CHEESE

  • We offer an unmatched selection of organic (thus non-GMO-fed) cheeses.
  • All of our 365 Everyday Value® brand food products (including cheese) are Non-GMO Project Verified or organic (thus non-GMO).
  • We work with national suppliers to encourage the use of non-GMO feed.
  • We’ve pioneered many new cheese products from animals fed non-GMO feed.

WINE & BEER

  • We offer a good and growing selection of wines and beers that are organic and/or biodynamic, both of which prohibit GMOs.

BODY CARE & SUPPLEMENTS

  • We offer hundreds of organic body care products that are certified to the USDA Organic Standards or the NSF 305 Organic Personal Care Product Standards, both of which prohibit GMOs.
  • We offer a growing number of Non-GMO Project Verified body care and supplement products.
  • We offer a growing number of supplement products that have received iGen GMO review.
  • We are working closely with the supplement and body care industries to identify areas of GMO risk and explore non-GMO alternatives.
