Dried Fruit Compote

This traditional dried fruit sauce can be paired with ice cream for a dessert, or served with roast turkey or ham for a sweet complement to savory flavors.
Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup dried strawberries
  • 1/2 cup chopped prunes
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup dried cherries
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rum
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 1/4-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and halved

Method

Combine all of the dried fruit in a large bowl and add 2 cups of hot water.

Soak for 15 minutes.

Drain, reserving 3/4 cup of the soaking liquid.

Combine the fruit with the reserved soaking liquid in a saucepan.

Stir in the brown sugar, rum, cinnamon stick and ginger. Bring to a boil.

Reduce heat and simmer the mixture for 20 minutes, or until the fruit is tender and most of the liquid is evaporated and thickened.

Remove the cinnamon stick and the ginger pieces before serving compote warm or at room temperature.
