Are keg wines tapped from boxed wine? Nope. The wine served on tap comes from wine barrels or stainless steel tanks shipped directly from wineries into a keg that is hooked up to the keg and tap system, similar to the system used for beer. Our relationship with artisan winemakers allows us to tap into small lots of hand-crafted wines — direct from barrel or tank, to keg, to you!
So how does it work? Much like draft beer. Wine is stored in kegs that hold 4-4.9 gallons, or about 25 bottles of wine and hook up to a keg and tap system. Passing through a low-pressure system, an inert gas – usually nitrogen or argon – pushes the wine through. Gas goes in, wine comes out. Because the wine is never exposed to oxygen, it stays fresh indefinitely. No corked/spoiled wines!
How is it green? The green factor is that keg wines allow us to significantly reduce packaging and waste, while lowering our carbon footprint. Each 4-4.9 gallon keg prevents the use of 25 bottles, 25 corks, 25 capsules, 25 labels and two cardboard boxes! No more alleys full of empty wine bottles, and boxes and packaging to be disposed! And every keg is cleaned, refilled and reused time and time again.
A growler is a 64 oz or 32 oz glass jug used to transport draft beer in Australia, the United States and Canada. The term likely dates back to the late 19th century when fresh beer was carried from the local pub to one’s home by means of a small galvanized pail. It is claimed the sound that the CO2 made when it escaped from the lid as the beer sloshed around sounded like a growl.
