Community Outreach

Whole Foods Market believe in supporting the community we serve. Each of our stores has the power to make decisions at a local level about how best to serve our customers and community.

Inspiring Local School Children

Now in its fourth year, Schools to Market takes thousands of local school children on the journey from seed to supermarket shelf. We're proud to support dozens of schools throughout London, Cheltenham & Glasgow as we help them grow their own produce and facilitate healthy eating education programs. Alleviating Global Poverty

Whole Planet Foundation’s mission is poverty alleviation through microcredit in communities around the world that supply Whole Foods Market stores with products. We currently support 1,310,827 micro entrepreneurs in 70 different countries around the world.

5% Days

We have four designated days throughout the year where 5% of the day’s net sales go directly to non-profit organisations. This includes Whole Planet Foundation and Whole Kids Foundation. Customers can support the selected organisations by shopping or donating at the tills.

Improving our Local Environment

We pledged to plant one tree in the Heart of England Forest for every Christmas tree sold in our UK stores. Six months later, a group of well-booted team members headed to the forest for a planting party of our 1,000 oak trees. Watch more here.

Surplus Food - What happens to our waste?

  • Reduce by Minimising Wastage - We've been trying to make green choices since we opened our first store. We understand that companies can have a large impact on our environment. Our aim is to become a Zero Waste store. This is defined (in the waste industry) as diverting more than 90% of waste from landfill or incineration. Between our food bank partnerships, store-wide composting programme, and our recycling efforts we currently divert 83% of our waste.
  • Food Donations - We produce amazing food on a daily basis and unfortunately at times, some becomes surplus. At Kensington, we donate this food to City Harvest who ensure it goes to those most in need. We also work with Evolve Housing + Support and Equal People Mencap supporting their client cooking educational programmes.
  • Composting - We compost our organic waste at the composting facility nearest to our store. We partner with a company called Bio Collectors who collect our fruit and vegetable trimmings and items unfit for sale or chaity collection. They take this to their facility in South London and after processing, it becomes fertiliser for farms in Surrey, lowering those farms use of petro-chemical fertilisers.

Local Community

We take working with the local community very seriously. Perhaps you are already aware of this and that is why you got in touch? If not, perhaps we can take a moment to illustrate the contribution we make to our community, and the kinds of projects we're supporting.
