About Dr. Ian Smith
Dr. Ian Smith, author of the no. 1 New York Times Bestseller Shred: The Revolutionary Diet, and Super Shred: The Big Results Diet as well as The Shred Diet Cookbook. He is a former co-host of the Emmy winning daytime talk show, The Doctors. He also served as the medical/diet expert for six seasons on VH1’s highly-rated Celebrity Fit Club. Among many other accolades, he was also appointed by President Obama to a second term on the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition.

Meet Our Educator

Akua Woolbright, PhD

Community Health & Wellness Educator, Whole Foods Market

Akua Woolbright is an expert in teaching people how to use plant-based foods to help prevent and reverse disease. Dr. Woolbright came to Detroit almost 2-years ago from the
corporate offices of Whole Foods Market in Austin, TX where she helped to create Health Starts Here, the company’s healthy eating program. Akua conducts healthy eating classes for company executives and team members, customers, and community organizations.
Prior to joining Whole Foods Market in 2009, Dr. Woolbright lived in Washington, D.C., where she received her PhD in nutritional science from Howard University and worked as a public health nutritionist in the areas of breastfeeding promotion, cancer prevention and survival, HIV/AIDS treatment, weight loss, asthma, and international childhood malnutrition.

All classes at the Nutrition & Culinary Educations Center are free of charge.


All classes will be held in the Whole Foods Market Teaching Kitchen located at 3670 Woodward Avenue, Suite 103-B, unless otherwise noted. 
The Kitchen is a separate facility from the store, located directly on Woodward between Mack and Parson next door to the Bank of America.


To avoid being ticketed or towed during class, please avoid parking in the store’s parking lot. Parking can be found on the street or directly behind the kitchen in the Wayne State University parking structure.
WSU parking stubs will be validated.
