Exfoliate with DIY Rose Facial Scrub

Our recipe for DIY facial scrub is perfect for an at-home spa date with your friend, sister or sweetheart.

How do I love exfoliation? Let me count the ways. First, exfoliation removes dead skin cells, which helps to keep your pores clear. Second, a gentle scrub once or twice a week primes your skin to absorb serums and moisturizers. After exfoliation, I can practically feel the rest of my regimen sinking into my skin.

Speaking of moisturizer, that reminds me of one more reason that it’s great to exfoliate. If you live in a place with cold winters, the wind and indoor heat can lead to dry, flaky skin. Gentle exfoliation removes flakes and readies your skin to accept a rich, plant-based facial oil or cream.

For crafty types, exfoliation is an occasion to get creative with ingredients you may already have in your pantry. Our recipe for DIY facial scrub is perfect for an at-home spa date with your friend, sister or sweetheart. Almond meal and garbanzo bean flour provide the exfoliating power, rose hip oil delivers antioxidants, and rose otto or absolute adds an uplifting aroma.

2 tablespoons (12 g) almond meal

1 tablespoon (6 g) garbanzo bean flour

1 tablespoon (15 ml) rose water

1 tablespoon (15 ml) rose hip oil

5 drops rose otto or absolute in jojoba oil

1 teaspoon (5 ml) honey (optional)

Combine the almond meal and garbanzo bean flour in a small mixing bowl. Add the rose water, rose hip oil, essential oil and honey, if desired. Stir the scrub until the ingredients are well blended.

To use, gently massage the scrub onto moistened skin in a slow, circular motion. Rinse with water, then follow with toner. This scrub can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. Makes enough for about 2 scrubs.

If you’re pressed for time, or if DIY’s just not your deal, there are plenty of other exfoliating options. The Nourish Advanced 2-Speed Facial Cleansing System uses soft bristles and a spinning brush head to cleanse and renew your skin. It comes with trial-sized organic cleanser and moisturizer, plus an enclosed envelope to help you recycle the replaceable brush head.

Finally, why should your face have all the fun? The skin on the rest of your body can benefit from exfoliation too. Right now, dry brushing is all the rage for removing dead skin while preserving your skin’s protective mantle. The Yerba Prima Tampico Skin Brush is made with vegetable fiber and features a long handle for hard-to-reach places.

Enjoy this recipe, but remember that essential oils can irritate sensitive skin, mucous membranes and eyes. Use wisely and keep out of reach of children. For external use only.
