Holiday Flower Arranging Tips from Our Experts

If you’re hosting friends and family this holiday season, consider a floral arrangement as the finishing touch for the dinner table, dessert bar or cocktail station. We asked our Global Floral Buyers Kate O’Connor and Amanda Rainey for their tips and tricks for buying, arranging and ensuring your flowers look fresh and vibrant long after the party’s over.

Pre-Made Arrangements

If you’re short on time or aren’t feeling particularly crafty, pick up a pretty pre-made arrangement or potted orchid in the floral department. If you’d like to request specific colors or flowers, you can also place an order in-store and pick up it up in 48 hours.

Make Your Own

Creating your own arrangement doesn’t have to be difficult or take a lot of time. Here’s how to start:

  • Decide on your color scheme. Some options our experts love: Holiday (green, white and red), Trendy (pops of either orange and pink or lime and purple), Pastel (washed out pinks, yellows and purples mixed with white).
  • Clear a clean working surface. Be sure your space isn’t under direct sunlight or under heated vents. (Both can cause wilting.)
  • Trim the stems with either sharp scissors or a blade to your desired length. Your bouquet should be taller than the vase by about one-and-a-half times. Cuts should be on the diagonal, so the stems have a bigger surface area to drink up water.
  • Fill a clean vase with water  (warm water will help closed buds open if you need them to). Place greenery or foliage first, then fill in blooms, turning the vase as you work.
  • Recut and change the water every two to three days to lengthen the lifetime of your arrangement. (Never store in the refrigerator — your food will absorb the aromas!)
