Orange-Spiced Nut Mix

Give these spiced nuts as a gift throughout the fall and winter. If you prefer, substitute walnuts or peanuts for the almonds, pecans or filberts.

Ingredients

    2 cupswhole shelled almonds
    1 1/2 cupsshelled pecan halves
    1 1/2 cupsshelled hazelnuts
    1 cupsugar
    1/4 teaspoonground allspice
    1/2 teaspoonfine sea salt
    2egg whites
    1 tablespoonorange zest
    1/2 cupunsalted butter

Method

Preheat the oven to 325°F.


In a large bowl, combine almonds, pecans, hazelnuts, salt, allspice and orange zest.


In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form; gradually add sugar, beating until thick and creamy, about 1 minute.


Add nut mixture and fold together until well-coated.


Place butter on a rimmed baking sheet and put in the oven to melt.


Arrange nut mixture in a single layer in the buttered pan.


Bake until nuts are brown, about 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.


Cool completely in the pan, then transfer to a covered container to store for up to 2 weeks.
