Even when things start to look bleak in the fridge I don’t panic when mealtime rolls around. I always try to keep a few things on hand in the pantry to help in those times of need.
One of my go-to ingredients is canned tuna. It’s incredibly versatile and the mild flavor means my kids will enjoy dinner as well!
Plus, Whole Foods Market has a line of canned tuna called Pole & Line that’s — you guessed it — pole caught, one at a time. That means I can feel good about buying it, knowing it comes from a sustainable fishery that uses an approach to eliminate the indiscriminate harvesting of other species. This Yellowfin Tuna is harvested in the Maldives, and each catch can be traced back to the Marine Stewardship Council-certified fishery and the actual boat that caught it. If knowing where your food comes from is as important to you as it is to me, this is great news!
Here are just a few of my favorite ways to prepare canned tuna for the whole family.
Add olive oil and your favorite spice, then scoop into lettuce cups or baby sweet peppers.
Make a classic tuna noodle casserole.
Mix with avocado and spices, spoon onto a split English muffin, add cheese and broil for a fantastic tuna melt.
Top fresh spinach with tuna, nuts and dried fruit for a quick lunch.
Add to bulgur and fresh herbs for a Tuna Tabouli.
Stir into cheese- or tomato-based soups for a lovely light meal.
Mix with breadcrumbs, egg and herbs and create delicious tuna cakes.
Add to your favorite macaroni salad.
