Hilary's Eat Well

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series.

Hilary's Eat Well

Food allergies never stopped Hilary Brown from enjoying what she eats. Instead, they inspired her to share exciting, new taste discoveries with others.

“I had been a passionate cook for many years when I found out I had significant food intolerances and allergies in 2003,” Hilary says. “So I cleaned out my cupboards and completely changed my diet.”

Hilary also decided to attend culinary school and in 2005, opened a healthy fast food restaurant called Local Burger in her hometown of Lawrence, Kansas. That’s where she first introduced The World’s Best Veggie Burger, a name coined by loyal customers.

Hilary's Eat Well

Before bringing her burgers to our frozen foods aisle, Hilary had already spent years cultivating relationships with suppliers to ensure that every ingredient, right down to the precise type of salt, met her exacting standards. She even made sure the burgers could be cooked in the toaster for easier prep, minimal energy needed to reheat and fewer dishes to wash.

Hilary’s veggie burgers are made without nuts, egg, dairy, corn, gluten, yeast or soy and are Non-GMO Project verified. Millet and quinoa give The World’s Best Veggie Burger a hearty texture and flavor, while Hilary’s Spicy Green Chili Adzuki Bean Burger is made with the same grains, plus bold flavor from garlic, green chiles, chipotle powder and lime.

Hilary's Eat Well

"We think carefully about how each ingredient impacts people and the planet,” Hilary explains. “With every ingredient, we ask ourselves big questions about the costs — and not just economic ones. We consider the person, soil, air, water. We look at the whole system. Our millet is a great example — it's a complete protein and a drought tolerant crop."

What are your favorite “fixins” for The World’s Best Veggie Burger?

I do love both these burgers and eat one of the two almost daily. On a very thin bun, they combine deliciously with a bit of vegenaise, a slice or two of dill pickle and onion and many varieties of greens. Once in awhile I add a slice of fresh mozzarella cheese and some pimento stuffed green olives. YUMMY

I keep Hillary's World's Best Veggie Burger in the freezer all the time. It's great when I am pushed for time, but still want to eat healthy. I fix it, and the Adzuki Bean Burger, on a whole wheat bun with the usual toppings of lettuce, tomato, onion and fat free mayo.

Hilary rocks in my book and so do her burgers. Please keep making them and thank you for the love you put in them. I love to cook mine in a cast iron pan and melt some cheese on top before putting them on a bed of mixed greens and grape tomatoes. I squeeze a touch of lemon on top and they make a wonderful meal, breakfast, lunch or dinner.

My favorite dishes are as a topping on salad (ie Healthy flavorful croutons). Also, using as a pasta alternative. I have homemade Marinara Sauce on top of the Adzuki Bean Burger. Yum, just thinking about it makes me hungry now.

Hillary's Adzuki veggie burgers are hands down the best veggie burgers ever. My kids love 'em as much as my wife and I. We eat them weekly and usually throw them in some 365 organic homestyle or Rudy's spelt tortillas with some butter lettuce, ketchup and mustard. You cannot beat the ingredients in these burgers. I'm extremely particular and these have an amazing array of organic ingredients including coconut oil (seriously, the best oil on the planet) when most are using cheap GM soybean or canola oil. Keep it up Hillary!

Try to make a gluten free burger that is good. Even Gardein has gluten in their products. That makes it very hard for those of us that have to leave the flour out of our diets

Local Burger is awesome! I'm from Lawrence, KS but now live in California and I wish there was a Local Burger here. Everything they serve there is great...especially the veggie burgers. I haven't seen these at my Whole Foods (Los Altos, CA) but will check again. I'm glad to know that Whole Foods will be carrying at least a couple of their products. Hi, Hillary! I hope you're doing great!
