With over 340 stores (and counting!), we’ve got a lot of hidden gems out there. Get the story behind the store in this eight-store series. Maybe your local store will be featured next!

Read on to find out how you could win a $50 gift card to Whole Foods Market®. UPDATE: Thanks to everyone that entered. Congratulations to our randomly chosen winner, Belinda A.!

Today we’re talking with Doreen Nardone, the Marketing Team Leader at the Yonkers store in New York.

Yonkers

What’s the best-kept secret at your store?

By far it’s our Limited Time Only ‘deep discounted’ items on Thursdays and Fridays. The deals this week are 50% off Applegate Oven Roasted Turkey on Thursday, March 28th and get 50% off a growler filled with local Captain Lawrence IPA Beer on Friday, March 29th. The sales are good only from 5pm to 9pm on their respective days…be sure and visit us!

YonkersWhat’s the tastiest dish in your store right now?

Our new burrito bar offers the tastiest vegan burrito in town! Handmade burritos, crispy tacos and salads made with Beyond Meat™, a savory plant-based protein option with a kick. Try the burrito stuffed with fresh guacamole and pico de gallo salsa — yummy!

What’s the most popular local product your store carries?

We feature two amazing freshly baked breads from local New Hot Bread Kitchen. The Multi Grain and Toasted Walnut Raisin are our customers’ faves. Stop in anytime and ask a Team Member for a sample!

Got any behind-the-curtain surprises you can share?

We donate over 700 lbs. of food to local shelters and food banks each week in partnership with The Food Bank for Westchester and County Harvest — both are nonprofit food rescue organizations serving Westchester County, New York.  Each organization alternates pick up dates — it works out great for everyone!

Tell us about one rock star Team Member.

By far this would be our Front End Supervisor, Nathan. In addition to offering our customers outstanding service, Nathan heads up our safety program in the store insuring the safest environment for our customers and Team Members. To support and encourage a healthier lifestyle, Nathan also organizes monthly hikes in nearby parks for our Team Members.

What’s the annual don’t-miss event at your store?

Our annual Storewide Easter Egg Scavenger Hunt and Natural Egg Coloring Event for kids! Kids and parents are always amazed at how they can color eggs using vegetables — beets for red, kale for green, onions for yellow!

Join us this year TODAY, Wednesday, March 27 at 4:30pm. You can find more fun store events on our online calendar.

Whatcha got going on with local schools or non-profits?

We are proud to sponsor an organic vegetable and organic garden every year at the Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale, New York.  Our team members volunteer every Wednesday and work together with the staff at Greenburgh Nature Center. We celebrate the harvest in August and share a meal using all the wonderful vegetables from the garden.

How does your store kick back?

We feature fun and educational films bi-monthly in our café! Again, check out our events calendar for March and April events.

What special service do you offer that every customer should know about?

Our parking validation for sure. It’s FREE two ways: their first 90 minutes with a $10 purchase or a 2 hour validation if you spend $100.

Now that you know what makes our Yonkers store shine in New York – tell us: what makes your local store a hidden gem?

My favorite Whole Foods is in Winter Park, Florida. The produce is divine! Especially local produce. The best is the local honey, from right here in Winter Park. The palmetto honey is my favorite!

I believe that it's just as important to know what you put on the outside of your body as it is to know what you put in the inside of your body. What makes my store a gem are the personal care products. I'm not talking about the ones that meet the stringent basic Quality Standards, I'm talking about the Premium Body Care products. These products can be found with the Premium Body Care symbol that only appears on the most exceptional body care products available. They have to meet the strict standards of the Premium Body Care Program. The standard draws on 25 years of experience and 2 years of meticulously examining each personal care ingredient from the personal care products. Then compiling an ever-growing list of ingredients that qualify as acceptable to the rigorous Premium Body Care standards. The result is that you have products with safer alternatives to ingredients commonly found in personal care products, Whole Foods ensures that they are made with environmentally friendly manufacture methods and that the products are truly effective.

My local Whole Foods store in Old Town Alexandria is a "hidden gem" because it has a community feel that you can't get at other local grocery stores. This is what I love about that store: Everyone who works there either recognizes me or knows how I am. They incorporate community organizations and local and state produce and products to create an even strong sense of community. They have Winesdays on Wednesdays for $5 and you get to try 5 different types of wines and food pairings. Not only that, you get to mingle with other folks who are there and get to relax after work. They are always doing new and innovate things that make you want to keep coming back. Like incorporating a coffee, beer and wine bar inside the store! Shopping at my local WF is an experience, not just a task, that's why I keep going back!

My "hidden jem" in my Virginia Beach, Virginia Whole Foods Market is the Porch! It's tucked away in the corner of the store away from the hustle and bussle of people shopping. Everyone who works there is always friendly and willing to help or make a suggestion. I love the various local beers on tap. (Who doesn't want a beer after shopping?) Also if I get there early enough, the waffles are excellent. In fact, I haven't tried something from the Porch that I didn't like. The coffee bar is excellent too. The Porch in the Virginia Beach Whole Foods is my "hidden jem"!

The hidden gem at a local whole foods was free parking!! I've been paying for street parking every time, and after 3 years, only realized a couple weeks ago the parking is free! (didn't even know there was a lot). The other hidden gem is organic milk is cheaper at whole foods than at all the other grocery stores in the area. So to save a $1 a gallon, I always get my milk here.
