Sausages: Cooking, Serving and Pairing Ideas

Get Cooking!

It sounds easy enough to cook a sausage but anyone who has been served a sausage that is overcooked, burnt on the outside while raw in the middle or one that split while cooking might disagree.

The key to great-tasting sausages is this: simmer them in beer or water until partially cooked and then finish in the oven or on the grill or stovetop.

After simmering, choose on of these cooking methods:

  • Grill. 6-8 minutes is all they need!
  • Stovetop. Split sausages lengthwise down the middle to crisp up both sides.
  • Oven. Split and arrange on a baking sheet alongside your favorite seasonal veggies.

  • The Traditionalist. Sauerkraut, brown mustard and chopped or grilled onions
  • The Progressive. Pickled chiles or chutney
  • Make it a complete meal. One-Dish Roasted Brats with Apples and Butternut Squash or Sausage and Quinoa One-Pot Supper are family and friend pleasers.
  • Leftovers? Serve sliced with your morning eggs, add to salads, beans or mac ‘n’ cheese
  • Cheers! Make a match with German pilsners or hard ciders
