The Spear-it of Sharing: Whole Trade Asparagus

When you bite into a spear of Whole Trade® asparagus, the first thing you’ll notice is exceptional quality and flavor. It pairs well with the delicious knowledge that your meal is helping to make real improvements in real peoples’ lives.

You see, each time you buy a Whole Trade® product, a portion of what you paid goes into a development fund for the community that produced it. The farmers and farmworkers then determine how to use those funds to meet the needs of their community.

Whole Foods Market® sources Whole Trade asparagus from Campo Borquez in Sonora, Mexico, where young people face many barriers to completing their education. Workers at Campo Borquez voted to invest community development funds into scholarships for children of farmworkers. In 2013 alone, they awarded 41 scholarships!

Watch this lyrical video to learn what motivates the Borquez family to go above and beyond when it comes to improving workers’ lives and supporting the surrounding community. (You’ll also get an up-close look at the special tool that workers use to harvest asparagus—it’s fascinating!)
