Camembert Cheese

By Cathy Strange, May 6, 2009  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Cathy Strange
A wheel of Hervé Mons Camembert is a strong, earthy, creamy little piece of heaven. Check out the footage of my interview with Mons during my spring visit – including footage of the caves and the surrounding region. We’ve partnered with Mons, one of the most well respected French affineurs, who selects Camembert exclusively for us from small producers near the lush green pastures of Normandy and then oversees the aging process. Delicately salty and smooth, Hervé Mons Camembert is exquisite when paired with a sparkling wine or a dry French cider and warm, crusty bread. Interested in learning more about cheese? If I want to serve the Camembert at 7pm how long should I leave it at room temperature prior to serving?

@KEVIN - I was able to speak with a cheesemonger to get the best answer for you! It depends on what cut you are using, either a wheel or a piece. If it's a wheel, which is the most common, leave it out for about 30 minutes.  It should be fairly aromatic when it is ready to be served! Hope this helps!

I've loved Herve Mons Camembert for over a decade - thank you! But I just realized that I've been composting the thin little wooden boxes they come in, when I shouldn't be, because of the metal staples! I confirmed that with Ecocycle. Oh dear.... It makes me wonder how much waste is involved on both ends of the spectrum, and whether you've considered other methods of packaging which would be more earth-friendly.

Your store in Virginia Beach used to have a Normandy camembert that's unrivaled; I haven't found any camembert there since you discontinued this one. Will you carry Camembert in the future? Thanks for answering! Sally

@SALLY - Our buying is done at the store/regional level so it's best to check with the Virginia Beach store directly to see if they plan to carry more in the future!

@JO - Since our options will differ between stores, it's best to check with your local store directly. You can run a zip code search here: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/list.

@PAM - Unfortunately I do not have a list of products available in each store. Check with your local store to find out what they have in stock!
