Saffron Road

We love our producers, suppliers and vendors and we think most of them have some pretty interesting stories behind their products too. We’re sharing some of our favorites here in an ongoing series. Like the ancient Silk Road trade route that inspired the name, Saffron Road is a place where great influences from different cultures intersect. A desire to celebrate global flavors and provide more options for consumers concerned about animal welfare led natural foods industry veterans Adnan Durrani and Jack Acree to pave a new road in the frozen foods aisle. Their line of ethnically diverse frozen entreés, broths and simmer sauces includes choices that are Halal, vegetarian and vegan. Many selections are also gluten free or Non-GMO Project verified. A commitment to the health and welfare of the animals also guides their approach. Chicken and lamb are sourced from carefully selected farms where the animals are vegetarian fed and not treated with antibiotics. Saffron Road successfully captures the authentic flavors of India, Thailand and Morocco, as well as offers a Halal take on everyday favorites, including macaroni and cheese, chicken nuggets and basic broths.

"Our chef has taken ethnic frozen meals to a whole new level of culinary excellence and the ingredients are fresh,” Adnan says. "We craft everything in small batches in kettles and our spices are ground on site for fresh, bold flavor.” When you’re browsing our freezer aisles, what are your criteria for choosing frozen entreés? I really enjoy Saffron Road meals. They're filling and delicious and an easy lunch on the go for me. The welfare and treatment of farm animals is very important to me and I feel this product is produced in accord with my beliefs.

While I enjoyed the flavor of the Lamb Vindaloo, I was shocked to find only a few shredded pieces of lamb and tons of sauce; the Chicken Biryani wasn't much better with only 2 pieces of chicken. Halal, or otherwise, this does not reach entree status.

This why I love Whole Foods! I will pick up a couple of entrees during my next shopping trip.

Can not wait to try these. I will pick up some lamb ones tomorrow if available. Thank you.

I can't wait to taste the Saffron Road frozen entrees. We like to keep healthy options in the freezer for those evenings when we have no time to cook! That Lamb Saag looks delicious!

It's great to see Saffron Road products in Whole Foods. I hope more retailers take it on. In addition, they taste great! It's great the Whole Foods is offering Halal options to its consumers. Well done Saffron Road and Whole Foods!

I love Saffron Road not only for their quality products, but also for the ethics in producing them. It's wonderful to have Whole Foods carry organic halal products. I become a Whole Foods regular mainly because of Saffron Road.

From the way the process of making Saffron Road products is described here, it's no wonder this product line is not only high quality but also so delicious. Carefully crafted foods with a company that stands behind ethical consumer practices are always worth the effort to find. Thank you, Whole Foods, for carrying Saffron Road in your stores!

I know Adnan; it's so neat to see him and Saffron Road showcased in Whole Food Market's new Know Your Producer campaign! Thanks for highlighting this amazing brand in your stores!

Oh, I haven't tasted yet this kind of food. But reading all the feedback and reviews about this make me want to try it out. I also love to eat organic and vegan foods.

I reluctantly bought a few of these after Whole Food stopped stocking the Whole Kitchen brand. The Saffron Road brand was not only 50% more expensive but it came with less food, even less than what is posted on the carton since the water content was so high. This entree is more like a disgusting snack whereas the Whole Kitchen brand were delicious meals. I stopped shopping at Whole Foods because of the switch and now purchase the Central Market brand from a competitor.

So happy to know that I can now find halal food in downtown Toronto at that too at my favorite grocers. Thanks Whole Foods!

Brittney says …

If animal welfare is important to you, please research what halal actually means. The animals are cruelly bled to death while fully conscious.

Umar says …

Sorry Britney but thats not what halal means. Quite the contrary!

I just bought for the first time Kheema Matar. I looked at the box very carefully before buying. Something told me your frozen foods Saffron Gardens are hallal. Is this true? I bought this product thinking it was an Indian dish, not halal. A reply is necessary or else I will never buy your products again.

@SUNSHINE - This is a blog post about Saffron Road which is not a product we make from Whole Foods Market. I would suggest reaching out to Saffron Road directly at http://www.saffronroadfood.com/contact-us/ so that they can better answer your questions!

Franklyn Elliott says …

Would be glad to pay more if Saffron Road would add more chicken or meat to its products. Loved the Vindaloo.

Shabnam Merali says …

Where do I find these products

Nikki - Community Moderator says …

@SHABNAM - If you cannot find these at your local Whole Foods, you can find other retailers on their website at http://www.saffronroadfood.com/store-locator/.

I know the meat you sell is halal that is from cattle and chickens . Is it also zabeeha ? Sometimes these two times are confusing. Sure our family is glad to hear about these products available at whole foods
