Jennifer at the finish line of Nike Women's Marathon San Francisco

Every year, 30,000+ people come to San Francisco to run the Nike Women’s Marathon opens in a new tab to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As the race celebrates its 10-year anniversary on October 20th, I am happy to announce Whole Foods Market will be the official grocery sponsor! This marathon is the world’s largest women’s foot race (though men can participate too!), and it’s truly an experience like no other. It’s a chance for everyone to come together and run for a purpose. Plus, let’s not forget that every runner receives a Tiffany & Co. finisher’s necklace at the finish line… handed out by firefighters…in tuxes.

We all run for different reasons. I do it to explore, to stay active, and be happy. The Nike Women’s Marathon was the first full marathon I ran, and that was before I began working for Whole Foods Market.

This year my runner’s high has come early because the race I love has partnered with the company I love to work for. I am proud to literally stand and run behind a company that practices and advances environmental stewardship while satisfying, delighting and nourishing our customers, including through events like these!

Whole Foods Market is working closely with Nike to make this a near zero waste race. At past marathons, over 30,000 water bottles and thousands of plastic jugs were tossed in the trash. This year, there will be water trucks along the course handing out water in compostable cups. At the finish line, every runner and volunteer will receive a pre-filled re-useable roll-up water bottle. This will be my fourth time participating in the race, and I’m bringing my roommate with me to experience her first ever half marathon. If I had to pick one emotion to describe the feeling of standing on the starting line waiting to go, it would be happiness. And once I start moving and hear the breaths and strides around me, it sounds like an orchestra of encouragement. I just keep going.

Do you love to run too? In support of this year’s 10th anniversary Nike Women’s Marathon San Francisco, we are giving away 10 opportunities to enter* the race.

Tell us why you run in the comments section below by Wednesday, August 14th, and we’ll randomly select 10 winners by August 16th to join us at the starting line. Come along, run with me, get inspired and be happy!
