Our lives are busy and it’s hard to fit everything in, including eating for variety and essential nutrients. Supplements can help, and they can support optimal health, as well.
Read on to learn about a special 3-day sale happening August 1-3, 2014: Buy shelf-stable Engine 2 Plant-Strong™ Almondmilk or shelf-stable 365 Everyday Value® Organic Almondmilk and get 40% off Vega Protein Smoothie.
Supplements are just that — supplements, not replacements. They cannot replace a healthy diet, but can help keep the body strong and well by focusing on prevention and support.
Think of supplements as a smart way to be good to your whole body.
Susan Wattik, who works at our Global Headquarters, shares two of the supplements she always has on hand — multivitamins and protein powder — and picks her current favorites.
Multivitamins: a Neat, Tidy Package
Supplement formulas are scientifically developed combinations of herbs and nutrients targeted to specific functions. They can be more effective than single ingredients. Multivitamins are one example, available in formulas for specific age, gender or dietary needs.
If you think about how many ingredients are in a multi, you’d be swallowing separate pills all day to cover the bases! Also, many nutrients often work together in the body. For example, iron is better absorbed in the presence of vitamin C and, though calcium is crucial for bones, it can’t work properly without magnesium and vitamin D.
Susan’s Pick: Kind Organics
Our Whole Body Team Members are particularly excited about the new Kind Organics line of multivitamins from Garden of Life.
Made from real food, these multis are formulated with over 30 organic fruits and vegetables. Like all foods labeled as organic, they’re certified by the USDA. They’re also Non-GMO Project verified opens in a new tab.
Look for Men’s Multi, Men’s Multi 40+, Men’s Once Daily, Women’s Multi, Women’s Multi 40+, Women’s Once Daily and Prenatal Multi. The value size (20% more free!) is only available at Whole Foods Market stores.
Protein: Shake it Up
Protein provides amino acids, vital for lean muscle tissue growth and repair, as well as cellular metabolism. Your body may get sufficient levels of protein from foods you eat, but if you’re looking for additional protein to support lean muscle, metabolism or your immune system, supplemental protein may be a convenient option.Just like your multivitamin and other tablets, consider protein powder as a supplement, not a replacement. It normally provides about 15g protein per serving with no saturated fat, is vegetarian and some varieties are dairy free. At Whole Foods Market, all our protein powders are also all free of the unacceptable ingredients opens in a new tab outlined in our Quality Standards.
Susan’s Pick: Vega Protein Smoothie
Formulated by Brendan Brazier, vegan professional Ironman triathlete and bestselling health author on plant-based nutrition, Vega Protein Smoothie does not have dairy and soy, and contains no artificial flavors and colors, or artificial sweeteners. One serving of Vega Protein Smoothie gives you 15 grams of complete, plant-based protein. It’s available in Bodacious Berry, Choc-a-lot, Oh Natural, Tropical Tango and Viva Vanilla flavors.
