I’m a total produce nerd and keep close tabs on fruits and veggies as they move in and out of season. As the Sumo tangerine of late winter becomes a fruit of the past, here comes the Ataulfo mango to remind us that warmer weather is right around the corner. April is mango madness time around here and I’m glad every year for its lively – albeit short lived – season! Here are some of my favorite facts and tips to get the most out of mango season.A burst of nutrients: Phytochemicals, antioxidants and vitamins, oh my! Mangoes have a bunch of awesome plant nutrients. A big burst of Vitamin C is available in each fruit, as well as a good dose of fiber and Vitamin A. Don’t forget beta-carotene, which gives mangoes their yellow-orange coloring. Fresh or frozen mango adds a burst of sweetness to savory dishes and desserts and gives you a nutrient boost, too.
How to pick a ripe mango: The yellow mangoes that we source from Mexico are called Ataulfo (aht-ah-uhl-foe) mangoes. They have a smaller pit than other mangoes, their flesh is smooth and creamy and the skin is quite thin. Ripeness for the Ataulfo mango is determined by its coloring: green means unripe and deep golden yellow means ripe – plus it’ll feel soft when lightly touched.
Peel and pit mangoes like a pro: If you ever struggle with how to get all of the yummy flesh out of every mango, check out this video opens in a new tab for an easy method. Whether you are getting out chunks for salsas or slices for a garnish, we've got you covered.
Mango recipe tips: Mangoes are good in both sweet and savory dishes. Smoothies, sorbets, ice pops and just plain slices make great refreshing treats. Mangoes mixed into salsa with onions, peppers and cilantro can add a great pop of flavor to tacos…or just about anything. Chutney? Relish? You name it — mangoes are good for it.
Pair up: Chicken, fish and shrimp make good mango partners. Try grilled tofu, too!
Basic Mango Salsa: Mix 1 diced mango, half a diced small red onion, 1 minced small Serrano pepper, chopped cilantro, and lime juice, then season with a dash of salt. Add diced avocado for a major treat!
