Whether enjoying some sun on the beach, in the garden or up in the mountains, it’s essential to protect our skin before and after exposure. Discover the specific ingredients and highest-quality products to choose for summer skin care. Rebecca Hamilton is Director of Product Development for the W.S. Badger Company. It’s essential to protect our skin from the sun, both before and after exposure:

  • If you choose to spend a lot of time in the sun, you should have a sunscreen that is safe and effective.  Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a “sun block” that will protect you against 100% of the UV rays.

  • Your best protection from the sun is to moderate your sun exposure and to wear protective clothing.

  • If you do need a sunscreen, you should look for a mineral zinc oxide sunscreen that has a base of natural and organic ingredients such as shea butter or jojoba oil.

  • After sun exposure, a good aloe vera gel or a soothing shea butter based balm will do wonders for sun-parched skin.

A first aid kit to take care of cuts, burns and scrapes during outdoor activities should include:

  • Natural antiseptic or wound cleaning solution

  • Plenty of band aids and sterile gauze pads

  • Herbal booboo balm or homeopathic first aid ointment

  • Homeopathic burn care or aloe vera gel

  • Poison ivy soap and a natural anti-itch cream

According to Rebecca Hamilton, there are many benefits of the Premium Body Care and Organic Body Care standards developed by Whole Foods Market:

  • The standards are fantastic for product innovation and as more companies are forced to improve the quality of their ingredients, the economic availability of complex organic ingredients will increase.

  • The Premium Body Care standards create a much-needed guideline for “natural” that previously didn’t exist.

  • The Organic standards regulate the term “organic” in association with personal care products, and now Whole Foods Market customers can shop with confidence knowing that all organic personal care products comply with one of two reputable certifiers, the USDA and NSF.

The skin is the largest organ in the body:

  • Use the same quality of natural and organic products on your skin as the ones that you would choose to eat.

  • In addition to protecting yourself from too much sun, always look for natural and organic insect repellents.
