Putumayo Celebrates Carnival in Rio with Brazilian Beat

Read on for a chance to win a 6-CD set from Putumayo’s Brazilian series. Dan Storper is the CEO and Founder of Putumayo World Music.

Warm up your winter and celebrate Carnival in Rio (or vicariously at home!) with Brazilian Beat, Putumayo’s latest release that uncovers the roots-influenced contemporary Brazilian music scene.

Glittering break beats are at home with bouncing berimbaus while rolling Afro-Brazilian rhythms, retro samba soul and velvety bossa nova vocals mesh and groove organically.

Selected from tens of thousands of songs collected by Putumayo to introduce new global music to broad audiences, Brazilian Beat chronicles the vibrant indie scene in Brazil and around the world. Musicians are taking samba, bossa nova, and MPB (Brazilian popular music) and deftly incorporating electronica, soul, funk and just about every other music imaginable.

Sultry or upbeat, the tracks on this compilation of hip, rootsy artists aim to raise listeners’ moods and introduce even die-hard fans to a new crop of Brazilian music innovators. Featured alongside unsung icons such as samba soul master Marcos Valle are rising new stars like Tita Lima, daughter of the bassist from psychedelic hipster darlings Os Mutantes.

Brazilian music has bubbled into an indie scene-to-beat-all-indie scenes in underground clubs and on small labels from São Paulo to Rome. You can go to Italy and find a hot bossa nova scene, and they have their own sound, like Roman bossa band BungaLove’s “Minha Loucura.” A diverse array of young musicians, such as Fino Colectivo, draw on Jorge Ben’s lush ’70s samba-soul sound—and transform it.

It’s a realm of discovery, even for ardent followers of global music. Brazilian Beat is available at most Whole Foods Market stores. Do you warm up your winter with music? Let us know how in the comments below for a chance to win a 6-CD set from Putumayo’s Brazilian series.

Comment by February 22nd for a chance to win. We’ll choose one comment at random to receive the CDs.

My 60 year old mother has the widest appreciation of music. She introduced me to these Putomayo CDs as her taste started growing from just South Texasesq tejano music several years ago. She even got the cats to like all the world music and will some how get them to do a little dance with her. Music cheers us up every day and we warm up with it winter, spring, summer, and fall.

The kids and I (6 yrs old, 4 yrs and 1 year old) crank up the music and have a dance party.

Putumayo is our "go to" label when we want to explore a new area of world music. We have found their editing and selection process always dependable, always giving the best artists and sounds. We have enjoyed Brazilian music but have little in our current collection. It would be wonderful to warm up winter evenings listening to this set.

Having moved to the warmer climate of sunny Florida from Boston last year, I find myself actually missing the cold winter nights and their good reason to make body warming dinners while listening to warming music drift in from the other room. I can only imagine how much Putimayo's collection of Brazilian Beats would set the mood for many wonderful evenings of warm music and home cooked meals. It would be a grand collection of music to have in any home, and maybe it will be ours! Wish me luck! :)

Music can definitely help set the mood by transporting you to a part of the world where the warm flower-scented breezes are puntuated by the rhythmic sounds of the samba beat. These CDs would be the perfect soundtrack to accompany a big pot of the feijoada, the national dish of Brazil.

I have been salsa dancing for a while and attend Zumba classes as well. Samba is the next physical activity/dance I'm going to master. I have checked out some Brazilian music from the public library and I love what I've heard so far. Looking forward to Brazilian Carnival via their music! Thank you Whole Foods for being global!

My winter is warmed by the music my 13 month old "plays" with his band set. He loves music and dances to any beat he hears. Watching him dance to the music - I just can't help but join in. These would be great to dance to with my little guy.

Fred T. Meyer says …

The music I play varies by season. There are several kinds of World Music that I play more in Winter than at other times. Especially, I play music by the Finnish group Varttina, in particular their CD "Oi Dai." My brother and I are 1/4 Finnish. We went to a performance by Varttina on a cold day in Chicago, years ago, and left absolutely glowing with the warmth of their music and their persons. Also, I play Celtic music more often in Winter. A song that I find especially warming is "Feel So Near," composed and sung by Dougie McLean. For several years I've enjoyed listening to the Putumayo Radio Hour, Sunday mornings on WDCB (in the Chicago Area).

Deb says …

I DJ for a dance group and love to use tracks from Putamayo. They warm up everyone.

Music is great anytime of the year -- but, it's when the weather outside is frightful, that the fiery hot music from the tropics is so delightful! It warms my soul and transports me, mentally, to where I'm sitting on a sandy beach and taking in the sunny breezes on a tropical shore. And, though I've never been to Brazil, the music lets me pretend that I have. Ah, sweet sounds of Putumayo -- take me away!!! <3

Debbie R says …

Perfect choice of music to get us through these last couple months of winter in Michigan! I too recently discovered and am in love with Zumba dance.. The Brazilian beat is what makes it so fun and motivating!

Marilyn Jenett says …

I was just thinking this week about buying some Latin music to exercise to. Perhaps the Universe will give me this gift.

Denise says …

I love Latin Music. We do a Brazilian dance number in our Zumba class. The music is so joyous and up beat that it puts me in a great mood regardless of the weather outdoors. The Salsa numbers are muy caliente tambien! As a native Michigander, I dream to one day par take in Carnivale!

I was the owner/partner of a coffee shop and coffee roaster. in my coffee shop, all I played was Putomayo CD's. I had the "music from the coffee lands", "Brazilian beats", "French music", etc... anyhow, I just want to say that they are amazing. Every customer asked me about the music I was playing and how could they get it. One of the best was the "Arabic Groove"! Good job Putomayo, you made my customers enjoy their coffee a lot better!
