Win a Care Package for Your Pet

Congratulations to JJ and Adrienne for winning their respective cat and dog each a fantastic care package! And thanks to all of you who submitted a response; you gave us lots of ideas for our own pampered pooches and crafty kitties. Does your dog or cat have a favorite treat? We want to know what it is! Carrots, apples, liverwurst…whatever it is, we want to hear about it. We’re giving away two care packages of healthy treats — one to a randomly selected dog owner and the other to a randomly selected cat owner — just enter your pet’s favorite healthy treat as a comment below by July 21st! What’s that…your pet’s favorites aren’t healthy? Well, we won’t disqualify you. Your pet may need the care package more than others! Tell us what treats they eat now, healthy or not. A little over a year ago, I got a puppy. The week before I picked him up, I researched training treats like crazy. I wanted to make sure he started his life off healthy (and obediently) with treats that were free of byproducts and artificial stuff. Once I got him home, I discovered that not only did he LOVE the treats I’d settled on, but he also LOVED frozen broccoli florets. Nothing beats a refreshing frozen broccoli floret on a hot summer day! What’s your pet’s favorite healthy treat? Enter your comment below by July 21 and you just might win a care package for your pet. Note: The winning pet care packages will be created with an array of these products.

Cori O'Holleran Bugle, my rescued beagle, is on a grain-free diet and gets plain raw organic yogurt with acidophilus to help her digestion. What she loooooves is a few pieces of cut-up fresh strawberries (as antioxidants) and peaches mixed in. So I call her treat peaches 'n' cream or strawberries 'n' cream. Mmmmm! Love when she gets a little splotch of yogi on her bulbous nose! (Hard to photograph, though)

Our dog, a Chow mix that adopted us five years ago, Bear-Bear, turns his nose up at typical treats offered by well meaning pet lovers at the drive up windows of banks and pharmacies but will do practically anything for a plain old piece of chicken jerky. It's 100% pure chicken and it's the only treat he considers worth begging for.

Kota loves sweet potatoes and green beans, both prescribed by her pain management vet specialist as great foods to mix with dog food to reduce calorie consumption and keep her full and healthy. Yum!

My shelter found love of my life, Hemingway by the way fits perfectly in my bike basket- make our weekly ride to local Whole Foods market, the fun for him is being babysat while I go in in and return with small sized varities of the grapes, and pre sliced apples- I believe the folks watching her 'jump for joy' have more fun than Hemingway. My Whole Foods Market gave me a welcome bag for him when I first adopted pet so this store is our place of choice!

My beagle loves hummus. Also fond of salmon, green beans and brown rice for dinner. He's been so much healthier since I've stopped giving him anything made with corn!

Our 3-month-old rescued orange tabby cat, Jack O'Malley, comes running when we open a bag of beef jerkey. He loves it so much that his favorite toy for the last month is the ripped-off top of the bag. It has tiny tooth marks all over it and he likes to stash it under one of our pillows so he can play with it--on the bed, all over us--around 4 in the morning. I do try to purchase lower-sodium flavors and of course he only gets a small amount. Jack's favorite healthy treat is Fage plain, fat-free yogurt. And a fresh catnip leaf from his plant; he chews it like gum and then rolls around on the ground where the leaf was placed.

My daughter and my granddog Max have been living with us for the past year. Max loves treats and one of his favorites is red peppers. He stays close by my side when I am making anything containing red peppers, knowing that I will share this tasty treat with him.

When I rescued Hercules (a terrier mix), his ribs were sticking out. He loves to eat everything. Once he stole a loaf of whole grain bread and ate most of it before I caught him. His favorite food is tomato. Secondly he likes zucchini. Actually, he just loves fresh food and will eat anything.

My cats both love anything dairy! As tiny kittens they used to try to steal our coffee, because of the half-and-half in it. They are generally well behaved, but when we have any kind of dairy they get crazy and it's work to keep them out of the food! Luckily they also think their dry food is a treat. Unluckily they react badly to every organic brand I've every tried and get upset stomachs, so they get a major brand I won't name that doesn't have this effect.

Carol Briggs says …

We got our cat, Emma, 3 years ago at the SPCA. That was her name when we got her and since it was my deceased grandmother's name, that is the name she kept. She likes canned tuna and simply freaks out when she hears me rattle the treat bag. She will go in and sit in front of where I keep it and meow for it. The treat is Whiskas temptations, salmon flavor.

My 15 week old Min Chin loves food and has not learned that begging for people food is not always well received. We learned in his 1st week that he was very into anything meat related, but the kind mom and dad like often is too spiced for our little bud's tummy. Since we try to get lean cuts of beef and cook some up without all the seasoning. He goes bonkers!

Shelley Robbins says …

Boy, does my Newfoundland Josephine need a pick-me up! (who would pick her up?).She loves corn on the cob but had an unfortunate incident this week where it didn't digest and she's recovering from abdominal surgery. So, no matter how enormous your beast is, corn cobs are out. She does enjoy nibbling on newly roasted coffee beans ()anti-oxidants) and loves a good beer. Healthy? She is healthy as a horse, or a house..... she eats plenty of carrots, tests my gazpacho and tabouleh. Maybe the key to health is variety..... ( leaving out corn cobs, of course).

Our collie-shepherd mix, Arbor, LOVES sharing a pear with her papa! She comes running as soon as she hears that drawer open in the fridge. Her and her papa hop up in their easy chair and share their favorite snack. =) She also loves apples, watermelon, oranges, and bananas. Her daily eating consists of tons of veggies, organic chicken, and organic brown rice. Other snacks she loves include chicken wrapped yams or homemade doggy-biscotti.

Our Weimaraner Bella LOVES strawberry tops and ice cubes. :-)

Recently, our 11 year-old yellow lab, Maggie, has been enjoying freshly picked blueberries from a local farm. She also loves to share apples with us. Every evening when we make salad she waits for pieces of cucumbers, red cabbage, carrots, or other crunchy veggies to drop from above. I don't feel guilty giving her little bits of fresh fruits and veggies because they're so good for her, as long as I've already checked in advance to make sure that what we give her is safe for dogs.

Elena Connell says …

My dog, Trixie, loves ice above all things!

Cynthia Bettencourt says …

Our cat Emily loves many vegetables and fruits. The more seeds they contain, the better. Produce shopping always includes consideration of variety for Emily. Her absolute favorite vegetables are cucumber and roasted asparagus. Her most loved fruit is cantaloupe. Cilantro is her favorite herb for garnish, though basil is a close second. She does also enjoy the typical fish and meat that our other two cats enjoy. She is now an indoor girl, but in her outdoor days, Emily used to eat our lettuce down to a nub then roll in the herb garden like it was all catnip!

My whippet, Sage loves carrots. When he hears me peeling them in the kitchen, he comes in with Great Desire on his face. Of course, he also has been known to eat (ill-gotten) chocolate cake, chocolate coins, raw steak, bread, crayons (interesting, um, waste following that one), & virtually anything found in the trash.

Kathy Massel says …

For some reason, my yellow lab has always loved Blueberries. Baby carrots are another fav of his.

Our cats love catnip!

My cat, Colonel Boo Boo, loves yogurt. He prefers lite strawberry Activia and also appreciates lite blueberry Activia. I have tried plain, lite Greek yogurt, which he eats, but doesn't enjoy as much. I ask him if he wants some yogurt and he stops marching around the house and comes running to me. Of course, I do not overfeed him on the quantity of this treat.

P.S. My dogs favorite treat is frozen organic baby carrots!
