Win a Trip to Costa Rica!

By Rebecca Joerres, September 15, 2011  |  Meet the Blogger  |  More Posts by Rebecca Joerres
Do you like tropical adventures, delicious bananas, sustainable agriculture, long walks on the beach, Piña Coladas and getting caught in the rain? Then this is an opportunity you don’t want to miss! We’re teaming up with EARTH University to give you a chance to win a trip to Costa Rica to visit EARTH University in Guácimo, Limón. Five winners will embark on a seven-day Costa Rican adventure where they will:
  • Experience, first-hand, how EARTH University is preparing young students to become tomorrow’s leaders in sustainable agriculture, responsible business and community development.
  • Visit with the farmers who produce the rich and creamy EARTH University bananas and learn how their innovative growing methods are helping to save our planet’s precious resources.
  • Explore vibrant Costa Rica, relax on the majestic beaches of Puerto Viejo, sample local cuisine and cruise along the island’s southern coast in search of dolphins.
EARTH University is a nonprofit, international university dedicated to the sustainable development of the tropics through education, research and outreach. Whole Foods Market started selling fresh EARTH University bananas in 2007, then added their fresh pineapples, and was excited to begin offering the new frozen EARTH University Pineapple and EARTH University Banana Chunks in early 2011. The sales of these fresh and frozen fruits help fund scholarships, and finance research and investment in organic and sustainable agriculture. All of Whole Foods Market’s EARTH University offerings are part of our Whole Trade® Guarantee, which ensures fair prices are paid for products, better wages and working conditions for growers and sound environmental practices. Visit the contest page on our website for more details and be sure to enter on that contest page (not in the blog comments) by September 30th, 2011. No purchase necessary!

I am interested in EVERY aspect of this trip! I've long wanted to visit Costa Rica, always love the beach, am always interested in sustainable/organic farmers, farms, initiatives, and perhaps most importantly in this case, a university which prepares young people to become leaders in this field.

I'm a vendor at a local farmer's market and consider the sharing of information on sustainability in venues such as Whole Foods and street markets invaluable to furthering the cause. Thanks for all you do in the way of educating the world on how to make a difference.

This would be such an amazing trip to take and an excellent learning experience. I have always wanted to go to Costa Rica, however, and more importantly, I would love to see the University and how the local culture is taught the valuable lessons about growing organically. Living organically is such a big part of my life and many of my friends. I am a Whole Foods consumer and I will always be.

Each summer -actually from spring to fall - I'm one of the volunteers working with the 6 - 12 year olds in a summer camp "Wonder Garden" program. It's a challenge, but one which brings such remarkable growth - not only for the seeds, but the kids as well. Would love to bring the experience of Costa Rica to the children of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. Thanks for the opportunity to "just imagine."

I went to Costa Rica several years ago and I didn't see what what I wnated to see and that was all the birds. I said at that time that we had more birds in our front yard than I saw there. We should have gone to the national parks and I didn't know that. Since then, almost all of our birds have gone, probably due to the West Nile virus and it is really sad. We used to have every kind of bird that one can see in Northern California. I would love to go back and visit the natural areas instead of just the parts that they take tourists to.

I would love to win this trip to get hands on experience with the local farmers and the people who live on the land of Costa Rica. Growing up as a kid we had a large garden and orchards of apples and peaches.
