Sweet, Juicy Cherries

CherriesI’m going jubilee over cherries. Sweet, juicy, heavenly cherries! Although I love a variety of fruit, I’ll take a cherry over other stone fruit or a berry any chance I get. Here are two good reasons why: Raw Cherry Crisp with Chia and Dates and Cherry Frozen Yogurt – both are must-haves for a successful summer.

Cherries have a very short growing season. They’re at their peak right now, so get on board and hoard what you can, and don’t stop there. Remember, you can never buy too many cherries. Simply wash, dry, remove the pit (here’s a great video on Four Ways to Pit a Cherry), and freeze in single layers on a baking sheet. Transfer to a plastic bag and store in the freezer.

Pitted cherries make a wonderful addition to baked goods, salsas, salads and grain dishes. If fresh cherries are not available, frozen will do, and for many recipes, dried cherries can be substituted.

If you cherish cherries, you’ll appreciate these tips and recipes.

Be sure to purchase plump, firm cherries with green stems. They’ll range in color depending on variety, but red cherries can be purple, reddish purple or bright red. Rainier cherries are a delicious yellow variety with red streaks.

Got a favorite way you cherish cherries? Let me know.

The home made breads- do they have alot of salt- sugar and fat? because of blood pressure and cholestrol - I need ti be so very careful! Also - cherries - are they imported? Or are they from the usa?

@GRACIE - Your local store will be the best place to go for these answers. If there is nutritional info available for the in-house made breads, your store will have that info. Also, since our vendors vary between stores, they will be able to let you know where their cherries are sourced.

@MICHELLE - It is not common to carry them during the off season but it can vary between stores. Check with your local store directly to see if they have any cherries in stock now.
